At 10 yards out you can could easily shoot an arrow into a bale of hay. But as you move back you need more and more time and practice to still hit it.

But what if the target was across the Atlantic. If you were standing on the East Coast of the US and the target is in France aiming higher won't help. No one could hit that target.

That’s the word the Bible uses for sin—to miss the target. It isn’t that we need more practice. It’s humanly impossible NOT to miss. As a descendant of Adam all sin and fall short (miss the target) of the glory of God. Through one man’s disobedience, the many were made sinners.

Stop trying to pull the bow back further. Quit it! It is humanly impossible. Turn to Christ. Through the obedience of this One, the you will be declared righteous. By faith in Him you can hit the target--and your sin will not be in the eyes of the Lord. Now read Romans 5:19 The Meaning of Sin

Climbingout of a cave through a rock-face chimney, my son nearly reached the top butcouldn’t reach the next hand hold. Hecalled out “help me; I can’t make it.” He could have fallen to his death. Instead a man at the top lay downand reaching for my son call out, “Here, take my hand,” and saved him from theplace of danger to a point of safety. My son had a tendency to drift off. His checking out from reality and daydreaming was getting him in trouble at school. We told his teachers about it, but they were getting tired of calling his name several times to get his attention. A change would require a mental renewal. To live Biblically means living in the here and now. This is where Jesus wants you to live, not lost in your mind somewhere. I told my son, “The Lord wants you to stay here. This is the world he made, and where he wants you.” It required a mental renewal--not to live in the past; not to live in the future, but the here and now. This is Dr. Jay Quine. Remember the phrase “the renewing of your mind” from Romans 12:1-2. Living by the word of God rewires our mind to function the way the Lord desires. Be present, in the present!!!

We celebrate successes. A benchmark anniversary. The closing of a long negotiated business deal. Emerging victorious in a sporting event. Filing your taxes on time. There are lots of reasons to rejoice. But let me, Dr. Jay Quine challenge you. Do you rejoice when you fail? Do you celebrate when you lose that customer to a competitor. When you lose the game. When you end up paying a tax penalty for delinquent filing. You say, “It makes no sense to rejoice over failures.” But the bible says to rejoice in all things. After all, God is sovereign, loving, and omniscient. He is shaping your character more through your failures than your successes. So, rejoice in your failures, and again I say rejoice.

Every month I add up my expenses, and measure them against my income. I do a reckoning. The word “reckon” is an accounting term that pictures balance sheets. It is this term that Paul uses when he quotes Genesis, writing, “Abraham believed God and it was reckoned to him for righteousness.” Like Abraham, our balance sheet has negative righteousness. We need an infusion of capital… to be reckoned with the absolute righteousness of God. So Paul concludes, “The one who believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness.” This is Dr. Jay Quine, remember this word “reckoned” and by faith in Christ be credited with the righteousness of God.

Near White Sands New Mexico is an ancient lake basin where annual mineral deposits from spring run offs form large gypsum crystals. They lie partially buried in the rich soil so when you pick one up they are caked in dirt. But slices are easily fractured off showing their pure even translucent quality. The Bible tells us that although we are mud caked with sin we have not appeared as yet what we shall be. But when Jesus appears we will be like him, and see Him just as he is. It is a motivational hope to fracture off the dirt, and be pure, just as He is pure. This is Dr. Jay Quine. Like you, if someone makes me a promise, I expect them to fulfill it. So if I promised to give you my car and then gave it to someone else, I couldn’t exactly say I fulfilled my promise to you. The Bible uses the word “promise” in the same way. God promises us eternal life based on faith alone in Christ alone. But could we count on this promise if God didn’t fulfill His promises to others before us? For instance, what about all those promises God gave to Israel? Rest assured He will fulfill his promises to Israel as Israel, his chosen people. This is Dr. Jay Quine. Be certain of God’s promise of salvation knowing He will fulfill all the promises to whom He made them. Remember the word.

If you hold up a quarter you see a portrayal of the First President of the United States. But what if you wanted to make an engraving or an image of something invisible? How would you do that? But that is exactly what the Bible says about Jesus. He is the image of the invisible God. You look at a quarter, you would say, “Look, there’s George Washington.” If you look at Jesus, you should say, “Look, there’s God.” This is Dr. Jay Quine. Remember the word “image” when you think about Jesus. He is co-equal, and co-eternal with God the Father. In the mystery of the nature of God, Jesus does the impossible: Jesus is the full manifested image of all the nature and character of the invisible God.

Have you ever wondered why we call I praying at a meal “saying grace?” This is Dr. Jay Quine, and I want you to remember a word today. That word is “grace.” We say at dinner. We may know a girl named “grace.” But the word “grace” describes a gift, a true gift. It is not your birthday, Christmas, or your anniversary, but nevertheless you are given a gift. It means, “unmerited favor.” It cannot be increased because of good behavior; it is not decreased because of bad behavior. It is given independent of you. So the word “grace” is used for the gift of eternal life. It is a gift offered to all, regardless of any effort on your own. Is a gift of God. Grace is a word to remember.

We depend on the Bill of Rights to protect us from the enormous power of government. But what if all your rights were ignored, and you were imprisoned anyway? That’s what happened in the case of the People v. Jesus of Nazareth. Like ours, Israel’s laws protected the accused. But the requirement for two or more witnesses, the rule forbidding night court, and their protection against self-incrimination were all ignored. Pontius Pilate himself submitted to mob rule rather than Roman law by hearing the case without a formal indictment, no subpoena or cross examination of witnesses, and ignoring his own verdict of “not guilty” to be overturned. This is Dr. Jay Quine. Remember, the only appeal Jesus made was to God the Father for your salvation.

Biblical Word Study on "Covet", by Jay Quine

The Law of Moses is often compared to other ancient legal codes. They are written in the form of a treaty between the King and his subjects, laying out the rules for good behavior, and the consequences if those rules are violated. But it would be ridiculous if the King punished his subjects for things they thought. How would he ever know? But that is exactly the difference with the Mosaic Law and all other human laws. God measures what we even think. The commandment “Thou shalt not covet” condemns us. This is Dr. Jay Quine remembering this word “covet” with you. It tells us that God’s Law is absolutely unique in all of human history. He looks at your heart. Come clean and confess to the King Jesus and sin no more.

So often Jesus would take something common and use it as an illustration or give it new meaning. For instance, at Passover he took a piece of bread, and said, “This is my body which is broken for you. As often as you eat this, do so in remembrance of me.” It’s not the bread, but we are to remember Jesus. This is Dr. Jay Quine. I hope you often celebrate communion. As you take the bread, remember the living word Jesus. Remember that He has all the divine attributes as God. He is also truly man, and possesses all human characteristics. His divine nature and human character united together in one person forever. This is Jesus, the bread of life.

Each and every tax season we may wonder whether a deduction can be taken. Call the IRS once you get one answer, twice and you get another answer! You end up even less assured. Only one person can give you absolute assurance in this life, and that is God. He is able to do what he promises. So, when he says he will prepare a table before you in the presence of your enemies, you can relax, he can do it. This is Dr. Jay Quine assuring you that God is able. You can even relax in the midst of calamity. The Lord promises to be with you. You may get a tax deduction wrong, but don’t get this wrong; God will never leave you or forsake you. Remember the Word, and rest assured.

In ancient world cultures the first born often inherited all the rights, responsibilities and privileges of the family. This was especially true if the first born was a son. But if that son grew to be an irresponsible reprobate, an outsider could be adopted into the family and take the position of the first born. The Bible teaches that not only has every believer has been adopted into God’s family, but each and every one of us adopted as sons—as if each one of us is the first born. Each and every one of us adopted with the full inheritance of eternal life to be glorified with Christ. Every believer has first place; no one is disinherited. This is Dr. Jay Quine. Jay Quine: Comments on the Epistle to the Hebrews

The Epistle to the Hebrews, c. A.D. 64

Facing the prospect of deepening persecution (from Nero?) these Jewish believers were tempted to abandon their day-to-day practice of Christianity and return to Judaism. Just as believers had done in past times (Ch. 11), the writer encourages them to be pleasing to the Father and endure through faith, for their faith rests on a Person and work superior in every aspect to Judaism--Jesus Christ (1:1--10:18).

Chapters 1--4 The Superior Person of Christ

Although Judaism was based on revelation delivered through the agency of angels, Christianity is "better" because of its Revealer. Jesus is superior for He is the heir of all, the Creator, expresses God's glory, provides purification for sins, and is seated in the ultimate place of authority--the right hand of God (Ch.1). Such revelation is not to be ignored (Ch.2), for He is the means to fulfillment of man's role, frees from the fear of death, and understands affliction. Although Moses was great, he is a mere servant of Christ (Ch.3). Thus, one should hold fast to Christ's revelation lest the "rest" of satisfaction through doing the Father's will be missed "today." (Ch.4).

Chapters 5--10 The Superior Priesthood of Christ

Since Christ completely fulfilled the will of the Father, the Christian should persevere unto maturity by continuing to practice the application of God's word (Ch.5). If they refuse to be pleasing to God they can expect severe discipline (Ch.6). The severity is due to the greatness of Christ's priesthood, which is superior to the Levitical priesthood. The priesthood under Melchizedek is superior to that under Aaron because its focus is upon blessing rather than a continual reminder of sin and guilt (Ch.7). It is based on a superior covenant (Ch.8) in accordance with Christ who serves in a superior Tabernacle (Ch.9). To forsake the practice of Christianity is abandoning the greatest thing God could provide. Therefore, endure (Ch.10).

Chapters 11--13 The Believer's Response in Faith

Given the many examples of those who patiently endured through faith in God's promises, the Christian should likewise please the Father through faith (Ch.11). If they rebel then God will discipline them as a human father disciplines his son (Ch.12). Instead, Christians should practice their faith without fear of helping others in need (Ch.13).

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lost heart.”

A Look at Paul's Note to Friend Philemon, By Jay Quine

The Epistle of Paul to Philemon

Written from Rome, c. AD 62

Returning back to the city of Colosse, Onesimus, the runaway slave, carried this letter from Paul to his master Philemon, encouraging him to adopt a forgiving attitude and restore Onesimus now as a fellow brother in the Lord.

Verses 1-7 Prayer for Philemon

Since the church met in Philemon’s house (verse 2) it is likely everyone knew about the situation with Onesimus. Although this is a personal letter to Philemon, Paul greets members of this church to bring them into the suggestions he is going to make. Paul first acknowledges Philemon’s love and faith toward Christ and his fellow believers. He thus prays that Philemon will do the right thing according to his faith with respect to the returning Onesimus.

Verses 8-17 Plea for Onesimus

In love, as a fellow believer, Paul asks Philemon do the right thing. Paul explains that Onesimus is like a child to him, having become a Christian while Paul was under house arrest. He reminds Philemon his relationship to Onesimus in eternity will not be one of master / slave, but one of brother / brother.

Verses 18-21 Pledge of Paul

Since Onesimus ran away, Philemon lost some money (perhaps Onesimus even stole some). Paul makes a promise to personally pay any amount Onesimus owed.

Verses 22-25 Personal Matters of Paul

Paul anticipates being released from his house arrest and to visit the city of Colosse soon. He asks the church there to pray that the Lord grant this desire, closing with his usual benediction of grace in the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Therefore, through I have enough confidence in Christ to order you to do that which is proper, yet for love’s sake I rather appeal to you--since I am such a person as Paul, the aged, and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus.”

Comments on Corinthians by Dr. Jay Quine

Comments on First Corinthians

Written by Paul in A.D. 56

Upon hearing of the factions and their continued misunderstanding of the spiritual life (sanctification, 1:2), Paul writes this corrective letter to heal the divisions, establish unity, and curb the abuses of the Corinthians.

Chapter 1--4: Disunity by Divisions in the Church

After the introduction (1:1-9) Paul addresses the problem of division in the church. He begins with exhortation that they be "restored" (1:10). The formation of various factions (1:12-13) demonstrates worldly wisdom not divine wisdom (1:18--2:16), and spiritual immaturity (3:1--4:21). Certainly Christ is not divided, nor his ministers in competition with each other.

Chapters 5--6 Disunity by Disorders in the Church

Resulting from their spiritual immaturity, the church has not only allowed but boasts of accepting the heinous sin of sex with one's step-mother (5:1-13), suing one another (6:1-11) and sexual immorality in general (6:12-20). Paul expresses shock, and commands church discipline, out of court settlement, and living in appreciation that their bodies are temples of God.

Chapters 7--16: Disunity by Difficulties in the Church

Paul addresses the Corinthians' questions in the areas of marriage, divorce, Christian liberty, worship, and spiritual gifts, providing instructions which will bring unity to the church (7:1--14:40). Paul also instructs them regarding the nature of the resurrection (15:1-58), expecting this instruction to influence their lives. He closes with some final directive advice regarding collection and the ministry of certain individuals (16:1-24).

The Epistle of James

Written Between A.D. 44 - 49

Facing persecution and imprisonment from Roman authorities, and severe opposition from Jewish leaders and former associates, the early Jewish Christians lost family and friends, position in society, their jobs, and their homes. Combined with a severe famine in the land, many early Christians fled Jerusalem (cf. Acts 8:11-12). James, the leader of the church in Jerusalem, wrote this letter to encourage those who had fled to persevere and live wisely by being doers of the word and thereby mature in faith.

Chapter 1 Persevere

James encourages those scattered to persevere in these trials, knowing that if they do they will mature and ultimately be rewarded by God. They should not be tempted to blame God for being tempted to sin and give up, because God is the giver of good things, especially of His word.

Chapter 2 Practice

They should not only hear His word but put it into practice in their lives by not showing favoritism to the rich, but to love all. As was the case with their ancestor Abraham, their faith is also useless without works.
