Conflict Yields Fruit

Jesus was the Master storyteller.  His parables often involved encouragement for His disciples to be engaged in good works.  Often couched in an agrarian motif, a popular theme is the fruit tree.  The parable of the tree needing fertilizer in Luke is a favorite:

    And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”

The straightforward point is this:  Sometimes you need a little cr*p in your life to become productive!

This is Dr. Jay Quine, remembering the word “saved”. The Bible describes the greatest place of dangerto be in our sin, separated from God, hell bound to the pit forever. We’ve run out of hand holds. Let me encourage you to cry out for God for help. You can’t make it alone. Let Jesus rescue you to a point of safety,and be saved. Be rescued from danger by reaching your hand out to him and believe that the Lord Jesus died for all of your sins, and rose from the dead to prove a place of safety from death reserved for you. Come to safety by believing in JesusChrist.

We celebrate successes. A benchmark anniversary. The closing of a long negotiated business deal. Emerging victorious in a sporting event. Filing your taxes on time. There are lots of reasons to rejoice. But let me, Dr. Jay Quine challenge you. Do you rejoice when you fail? Do you celebrate when you lose that customer to a competitor. When you lose the game. When you end up paying a tax penalty for delinquent filing. You say, “It makes no sense to rejoice over failures.” But the bible says to rejoice in all things. After all, God is sovereign, loving, and omniscient. He is shaping your character more through your failures than your successes. So, rejoice in your failures, and again I say rejoice.

Have you ever wondered why we call I praying at a meal “saying grace?” This is Dr. Jay Quine, and I want you to remember a word today. That word is “grace.” We say at dinner. We may know a girl named “grace.” But the word “grace” describes a gift, a true gift. It is not your birthday, Christmas, or your anniversary, but nevertheless you are given a gift. It means, “unmerited favor.” It cannot be increased because of good behavior; it is not decreased because of bad behavior. It is given independent of you. So the word “grace” is used for the gift of eternal life. It is a gift offered to all, regardless of any effort on your own. Is a gift of God. Grace is a word to remember.
